Gallagher Remodeling Transforms an Underused Space into a Multi-Generational Retreat
When Cindy and Bob Keefe purchased their Belmont, MA home, the attic had already been “finished”—at least on paper. To the Keefes, however, it never felt like a true living area and it was little more than an extra storage zone. But as their family grew—with adult children, spouses, and now grandchildren frequently visiting—the need for additional available and flexible space for guest use became clear.

“The tipping point,” Cindy said, “was two Christmases ago. The whole family came to stay—there was total chaos. Four people got the flu, and we had three bedrooms all sharing one family bath. We always knew we were short a bathroom, and that was when we decided to move forward.”
With a reputation for thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship, Gallagher Remodeling was their first call. From the very start, the Keefes felt confident in the team’s process and people. “We knew Gallagher had a great reputation,” said Bob. “And we had done remodeling projects before, so we weren’t surprised by the level of planning. We know the upfront work is what makes a project successful.”

The Keefes had clear goals: add another full bathroom, create a flexible space for guest use for the adults to hang out, for the grandkids to play, for plenty of additional storage, and even for the occasional sleepover. The Gallagher design-build team came up with several creative solutions, including a suggestion to divide the space not with a permanent wall—which would block light from the two attic windows and create a separate room —but with a custom-built bookshelf that serves as both a room divider and storage unit. “That bookcase was a great idea,” said Cindy. “We wanted to keep as much natural light and flexible use as possible, and this really worked.”

The final layout now feels spacious and serene. The seating area is bright and cozy, ideal for reading, relaxing, or enjoying time with grandchildren. The sleeping area is tucked behind the built-in bookcase for just the right amount of privacy. In the eaves, Gallagher’s team made smart use of every inch, installing a built-in dresser and two oversized closets to hold both guest belongings and off-season household items. The addition of a large, walk-in tiled shower and extended vanity in the new bathroom brought much-needed comfort and functionality to the third floor.

Construction began right after the holidays—timed perfectly so the project could be completed before the Keefes left for their usual summer travels. “That timing was important to us,” said Bob. “Once the family left after Christmas, Gallagher’s team was ready to start, and they stayed right on track.”

Throughout the project, the Keefes praised both the detailed planning and the professionalism of the crew. Roger Gallagher’s thoroughness stood out. “He’s not a wing-it guy,” said Bob. “He’s precise, and he puts in a lot of effort upfront, which really pays off.”
Cindy and Bob also had high praise for Aron, the construction manager. “Aron was the key—he kept the train on the tracks. He worked with all the subs, he was meticulous, and he did a great job. The finish work was excellent.”
Despite a few changes along the way—typical for a project with custom built-ins—the work stayed mostly on budget and completely on schedule. Now, when the Keefes’ children and grandchildren come to visit, there’s space to gather, to rest, to play—and a little less chaos.
