Third Floor Space Becomes Primary Suite

What was once an unfinished attic with open rafters is now a full primary suite designed in a stunning Danish Modern aesthetic. Modern lighting accents begin on the staircase that ascends to the new space. The bedroom includes an inviting window seat/reading nook. The dramatic roof lines are accentuated and used as a striking design element, especially in the bathroom where the shower also features floor to ceiling textured tile.

The project added 450 s.f. – an entire finished third floor – to the home and includes:

• A spacious bedroom featuring a unique reading nook and cove ceiling.
• A full bathroom with walk-in shower, separate toilet room, and private dressing room.
• A new dormer along the width of the attic, providing full-height square footage in the bedroom, bathroom, and stairwell.
• A remodeled attic stairway, creating a cohesive staircase that leads from the bottom to the top of the now 3-level home.
• As part of this project, the entire slate roof (which was 110 years old and leaking) was stripped and replaced with heavy asphalt shingles that are designed to imitate the appearance of slate.

The home did not originally have a primary bedroom/bathroom. Instead, bedrooms on the second floor shared the only full bath original to the home. The homeowners desired a spacious suite that was “restful, bright, and quiet – not only audibly, but visually quiet” which provided the foundation for the physical and aesthetic design.
