As the late summer sun shifts lower in the sky, many homeowners notice how bright—or dim—their homes really feel. Natural light doesn’t just improve aesthetics; it affects mood, comfort, and even resale value. Following our July focus on opening up rooms, this month we’re showcasing how remodeling can maximize light through thoughtful design. Gallagher Remodeling has helped countless homeowners brighten their spaces, and these recent projects highlight some of the most effective strategies.
Enlarging Existing Windows
Sometimes, the simplest solution makes the biggest difference. In this kitchen renovation, a small window was replaced with a larger one to the left of the stove. A matching window is above the sink. The change brings in more daylight, frames an outdoor view, and creates a focal point in a hardworking space.

Opening Rooms and Adding Glass Doors
Light moves more freely when rooms are connected with an open floor plan. In a recent whole-home remodel, Gallagher removed the wall between the kitchen and living room, then added new sliding doors in the living room leading to a new deck. The result: sunlight streams through the entire main level, while the sliding glass doors allow a line of sight through the back yard.

Expansive Window Walls with Structural Solutions
For homeowners dreaming big, it is possible to incorporate dramatic window walls. In one stunning kitchen project, the team added a 14-foot-wide window along an exterior wall. Because that wall supported the second floor, an engineered steel I-beam and steel columns were installed to safely carry the load. The outcome is breathtaking—a kitchen filled with daylight and sweeping views.

Transforming Attics with Dormers and New Windows
Unfinished attics often feel dark and closed-in, but with thoughtful design they can become bright, livable spaces. In one project, an attic was converted into a primary suite. An original window was enhanced with a custom window seat, and on the opposite wall a full-width dormer was added to increase headroom and introduce three additional windows. Now the suite feels open, airy, and connected to the outdoors.
